THE NEXT STEP IN THE JOURNEY
The rewards of teaching require serious investments of time and energy. But for successful entrepreneurs seeking a challenge more invigorating and rewarding than any businesses they have ever created, the return on investment is incalculable. Unlike any business venture, becoming a Socratic Guide allows successful, principled entrepreneurs to leave a lasting legacy by educating and inspiring a new generation of principled entrepreneurs.
WE PARTNER WITH YOU
Acton's courses are designed for use in a variety of settings. All you have to do is put in the time required to prepare and lead a case discussion. Whether you want to teach employees in your corporation, aspiring entrepreneurs in your community through an angel network, chamber or other business organization, or undergraduate or graduate students at your local college or university, AFEE will be your partner.
SELECTION AND TRAINING
The AFEE teacher selection and training process consists of four phases.
Phase 1: Committing to the Socratic Method & Case-Discussion Leadership
Explore the Socratic Method - its importance to students and the commitment it requires of teachers - and Acton's teacher training program and approach in detail.
Phase 2: Learning the Socratic Method
Dive deep into learning the art of discussion leadership by reading books and materials about the Socratic Method. You will also be invited to observe a case discussion at the Acton School of Business and, when available, attend an Acton Teacher Training Seminar and/or a Harvard or Ivey case-teaching workshop.
Phase 3: Learning to Prepare a Case
Prepare and submit a practice case from the AFEE curriculum for review by an AFEE Master Teacher. You will have access to the Master Teacher File (MTF), which will not only assist you in preparing your practice case, but let you experience and learn how to utilize the resources available through AFEE's MTF.
Phase 4: Preparing for the Classroom
As you prepare to lead your first case-discussion with a new group of students, remember that most of them will find case discussion unfamiliar and very challenging. Students accustomed to traditional lecture classes may resist a teacher who doesn't give answers and a course that requires them to take full responsibility for their learning. In this final phase of Acton's teacher training materials, you will learn how to clarify expectations and structure the experience for students to make your course a success.
Throughout, we will discuss your goals and plans for teaching and how to use the Acton curriculum to fit the type of students and teaching venue in which you will teach. Upon completion of these four phases, you will sign a curriculum license and gain access to the Acton curriculum and other teaching materials.
